As we said before, the RX 400h's styling still looks fresh. We're still not fans of the taillights that look like they're embedded in tin foil, but we still appreciate the sporty, chiseled form. There's a price to pay for the rakish roof line, however, as visibility to the rear quarters is compromised by the cheeky, canted D-pillars. We recommend springing for the optional back-up camera, which takes the anxiety out of parallel parking.

Rear-seat cushions are firmer than those in front, but Nissan's decision not to include a third-row seat in the Murano is a boon for rear-seat passengers, who enjoy tons of legroom. Even with the front seats all the way back in their tracks, a 5-foot 7-inch staffer could still fit just fine in back.

BMW X6 xDrive 35i

Cold analysis would seem to indicate that this is a silly "lifestyle" vehicle, albeit one capable of high performance. Though we thoroughly enjoyed driving the 2008 BMW X6 xDrive 35i, in the end, it struck us as a 5,000-pound fashion accessory. One that likely would be flaunted by those more interested in eliciting catcalls of "that's hot" than bothering with such plebian concerns as the ability to transport five people.

In the past, it's been easy to overlook the Pontiac Vibe. The wagon has always been a superb all-rounder, but it's suffered from a star-power deficit; the previous-generation Vibe lacked the visual appeal of some rivals and the thrill-ride performance capability of others. Not helping matters is the fact that the wagon's corporate twin, the Toyota Matrix, enjoys an advantage when it comes to perceived reliability, thanks to Toyota's sterling reputation in this area. (Never mind that the Matrix and the Vibe are mechanically identical.) With the wagon's 2009 makeover, Pontiac aims to make the Vibe less chorus line and more leading man by endowing it with style and performance upgrades.
